Getting Creative with Mirrors

Explore fascinating mirror configurations to create illusions, view multiple reflections, achieve invisibility, and discover unique optical effects. This insightful guide teaches the secrets behind mirror reflections and unveils creative images.

Have you ever wondered how you can make yourself invisible to others? Have multiple images in front of the mirror? See an inverted image of yourself? If you know how reflections work, you can do many creative things with mirrors.

The following shows some plane mirror configurations that you should check out.

Viewing Your Profile

Number of Plane Mirrors: 2

To produce an image of your side view:

  • Position two vertical plane mirrors at about 45 degrees with each other.
  • If you're facing one of the mirrors from the inside, it should show the side view of your face.

Viewing Your Back

Number of Plane Mirrors: 3

To produce the image of your backside while facing toward the mirror:

  • Position three vertical plane mirrors so that these lie along the sides of an equilateral triangle.
  • If you view yourself from inside the triangle, you should be able to see your rear at a specific spot.

View an Object Upside-down

Number of Plane Mirrors: 3

To produce an upside-down image of an object:

  • Create a "corner reflector" by positioning three plane mirrors to resemble a cube's interior corner. Then, rotate the set of mirrors precisely 45 degrees from the horizontal.
  • If you view yourself towards the corner, you should see an upside-down image of yourself.

Be Invisible!

Number of Plane Mirrors: 4

  • To become invisible, all you have to do is to cover yourself with mirrors. Position the mirrors perpendicular to each other for best results, and your surroundings should be identical as possible.
  • Because mirrors reflect clear images from the surroundings, it gives the impression that you're invisible to those observing you.

View Your Reverse

Number of Plane Mirrors: 2

We all know that a mirror will produce laterally inverted images. You should see your image's left hand raised if you raise your right hand. If you want the opposite effect:

  • Place two mirrors perpendicularly to each other.
  • If you view the intersecting edge, the image on the mirror should be the reverse. This statement means that if you raise your right hand, you should also see the image's right hand raised.

Multiple Images

Number of Plane Mirrors: 2

To produce multiple images of yourself:

  • Position two mirrors less than 90 degrees.
  • View the intersecting edge of the mirror assembly, and you will have multiple images of yourself.
  • You will produce more images as you reduce the angle between the mirrors. If you position the mirrors 30 degrees with each other, there will be 11 images in the mirror.

Disappear Yourself

Number of Plane Mirrors: 2

To produce fewer images of yourself or to disappear completely:

  • Position the mirrors more than 90 degrees.
  • If you view the intersecting edge, you'll have fewer images produced.
  • There's a trick: if you position the mirrors 103 degrees apart and position yourself far away, you won't see yourself in the mirror.

Infinite Images

Number of Plane Mirrors: 2

To produce an infinite number of images:

  • Position the mirrors parallel to each other.

Try experimenting with your image by moving nearer or farther from the mirror assembly or changing positions. You might get some more interesting effects.
